(January 7th open to Darren and Rahne. If you get the reference you get a cookie)
She was running full speed, paws hitting the snowy ground as she moved at full speed. The moon was full and high, hanging like a golden sphere in the sky. Rahne had chose this night, this lovely night to just run, to simply rush towards the darkness and have some fun. Just being herself as she enjoyed the simple things in life. Her tongue lolled out of her mouth as she pranced forward, tail wagging brightly. Her head dipped as she slid forward, letting out a tiny yelp as she hit the side of the frozen lake.
She panted a few times and made a little barking and sniffling noises. Life was good when she was like this. When in her canine form everything was simple, there was no thinking, there were no issues, there was no drama just clean thinking.
She seemed to smile, tail whipping behind her as she looked about. Not a care in the world was there?

The night had taken over the sky. The animal was unleashed when the full moon arose. Darren had taken a trip over to New York that day, and he had become his far more beastly form when there was darkness. Things were much different in the Big Apple, at least when it was compared to Gotham. To get a good feel out of it, he needed to be his canine form, when his senses were heightened and stronger than ever. Luckily for him, tonight was a full moon, increasing his senses just a bit more than just being in another form. The large animal maneuvered his way through the park, putting all four of his paws to use as he ran this way and that. Smells entered his dark nostrils, sounds were several times clearer. It was always an exhilirating feeling to be this way. It was freedom, yet it was a prison at the same time. Being like this was conflicting for Darren, though tonight he thought more fondly of it.
The beast had come across an unknown scent. He sat on his haunches, taking a deeper whiff of the air. It was definitely canine, that much he was sure of. Pointed ear fluttered at the sound of dog-like sounds. Barking, panting. The wolf-like creature let his nose guide him to his target. Darren took cautious steps in order to find this stranger. Perhaps someone he could claim as an ally. At least, for the moment, he could claim this stranger a companion. A pack was preferred to going solo. Even as a human, Darren preferred to be in groups than be on his own.
Large eyes searched the area until a figure reached his sight. He found a canine alright. Slowly and cautiously, he approached the female and let his presence be known. His expression was one of curiosity, unsure if the other animal was going to be quite feral towards him, or act as if it were tame. He kept his eyes locked on the other wolf, letting out a barking sound to ensure he was noticed.
Tonight just got a bit more interesting for the werewolf.

Rahne whipped her head around, turning her russet nose towards the barking noise. She smelled him before she saw him but chocked it up to smelling the past scent of a domestic pet. But the barking caused her to whine and tuck her tail between her legs. Rahne had never encountered another wolf before. She pressed her feet into the slushy soil beneath her paw pads. Her ears flicked a few times showing her fear and apprehension.
She backed up, trying not to slip up in the snow. She whined and whimpered until letting out a shallow bark. How was she to talk to this dark creature.

The larger canine had frightened the other wolf. Darren hadn't tried using his vocal chords to form words in wolf form, and he honestly wasn't entirely sure if he could form actual words anyway. Besides, what good would that do when speaking to another animal? The other's body language clearly showed fear. Whining, tail tucked, flickering ears. The male had backed up slightly. It appeared that these were the only two breathing individuals running around the park in the night. That was probably for the best. If there was any prey around, be it man or animal, that would probably distract the werewolf from his current position. That looked as if it were not going to happen.
The cool ground felt odd on his paws. Well, they weren't quite paws, really, more of a mix between a hand and a paw, though in the current state Darren was in he referred to them as paws. Hazel eyes looked over his former hands, looking down at the ground in thought. He wasn't trying to be malicious towards the other wolf. His ears perked forward, his gaze returning to the other wolf. How was he supposed to communicate? Body language. The tension in his shoulders loosened up as he sat down, looking over the female wolf.
It must have seemed so odd to see such a large creature just sitting in the snow. His furry fingers moved about in the snow, much like when someone would tap their fingers on a hard surface. A habit familiar to man and beast form alike. He cocked his head to the side, trying to figure out how to communicate with the other. He wasn't familiar with communicating with other canines in this form. He was familiar with the first werewolf he encountered, but that was a different story.
He killed that one as a man.

Rahne was staring at his paws as well. When he sat down she realized he wasn't a normal wolf. Her ears twitched as her tail began to unfurl itself from its hiding spot between her legs. Her tongue flicked to her ebony nose before she sat as well. She decided to shift slightly, her head pretty much staying the same but her body shifting to a more human life form. She pretty much looked like a much smaller version of the wolf-man before her. She sniffed before tilting her head to the side. She wondered, she pondered.
Could he speak?
"Ye are no' a regular wolf," she said gruffly, her vocal chords still adjusting, "Are ye a mutant? Can ye...speak?"

Ears flicked back to his head upon seeing the wolf shift her form a bit. Darren could say he hadn't been expecting that. He had simply assumed that this was just a regular wolf running around New York. Perhaps he wasn't as alone as he had originally thought, though he wasn't entirely sure if that was a good thing. His body got tense once more, but relaxed upon hearing human speech come out of the other wolf-like creature's mouth.
If she could speak, Darren was sure he could do it too. Her accent had thrown him off a bit, but he decided not to make a comment on that. "You don't seem to be a regular wolf yourself," Darren said. He would have given her some nickname, as he usually did with someone he recently met, but he wasn't sure if he could form the right sounds to create a nickname. His head cocked to the side. Mutant? Oh, right. Mutants were people with some sort of molecular issue that gave them powers. No. Darren wasn't that lucky. He crinkled his nose before responding further. "Not a mutant. Clearly, can speak." His words had been a bit choppy, and it didn't help that his actual voice was rather gruff in his form.

"Aye," she clucked, "I'm a mutant. I can speak." She padded closer towards the wolf creature, claws taking up dirt as she moved forward. Her tail whipped back and forth behind her. She was happy she'd found another wolf to talk to. She tried her best to move the wolf maw in a smile.
"Muh name is Rahne," she said, twitching her ears and shifting her feet under her, "If yuir no' a mutants...what are ye?" Her ears folded back as her fur began to relax. He was just like her wasn't he? And wasn't it nice to talk to someone just like her?

The wolf creature watched the female creature approach him, hazel eyes watching her with interest. A mutant. That wasn't something Darren had thought of. Living a nomadic lifestyle for a good few years had given him a lack of knowledge about the full extent of a mutant's abilities. He figured she'd been supernaturally affected like himself.
That didn't mean he was going to shun her and shove her away. She was still another person, or wolf, that shared the ability to become an animal. This caused his tail to wag slightly behind him. He had someone to relate to. He didn't attempt to put a smile on his face, instead hoping his tail would show his feelings for him. She had given up her name, prompting the male to mention his own title.
"Darren," he said, lowering his head slightly to get a better view of the femme wolf. He contemplated on how to answer her other question. His eyes rolled upwards, thinking of how to answer. His sight focused back on Rahne when he figured out a few possible answers. "Wolfman. Werewolf. Man and wolf. Got like this a few years back. I... Was only human once. Long story."
Darren figured it wasn't going to be such a long story to talk about how he had turned from man to beast, but he didn't want to reveal that much just yet. Besides, he wanted to get used to his werewolf vocal chords before going on about his life story.

Rahne's ears pinned back. A beast of the night, supernatural. The work of the devil. Rahne instantly had the instinct to bolt and dash. But she paused as she noted his wagging tail. Her own curled around her haunches. Reverend Craig had thought she was the work of the devil as well. But this man-wolf was kind or so he seemed. She tucked her head back awkwardly, stomach a churn with mixed feeling. She lifted her hand-paw up to play with the golden cross dangling over her furry chest. What would God say to her talking with a real spawn of Satan? She was already a child of sin, would this mean she was guaranteed to go straight to the fiery pits of Hell?
She lifted her head again. "I'm sorry," she whispered, "Darren. I'm sorry. I dun think ye deserved tae be turned tae this. Neither o' us did. Tis terrible. I love bein' like this but...I know it's a sin. A terrible sin. But...life's so simple this way...so simple..." She lowered her head again.

The masculine beast watched the femme's ears pin back to her head at his explanation. Darren thought it had been a bit odd, but said nothing about it. Instead, he was fascinated by the cross around Rahne's neck. She must have been a religious person, unlike Darren. Sin was a word that wasn't used often in Darren's vocabulary. He was fine with that too. Life was made so much easier that way. He had morals, sure, but he wasn't following a religion.
His gaze travelled back up to her eyes when she spoke. She was apologizing. His head cocked to the side. She didn't have to be sorry about anything. Although he did have to agree that they didn't deserve to be animals, he didn't think of it as much of a sin.
"Sin? Is it really a sin to be like this without a choice? Take lemons and make lemonade."

Rahne sat down and thought that one over. It really wasn't her choice was it, to be this way. But she liked it. Perhaps that was the sin. She spoke up, voicing her thoughts. "But...I like tae be this way," she squeaked, "Pr'aps tha's what I mean about sin. Tha' its a sin tae actually enjoy bein' a beastie." She dipped her head, pointed ears folding back slightly as she stared at him.
She pushed her paws into the snowy dirt nervously. "I do like this. Even when I wasn't here an' I was back home I still loved tae run up an' down the forests o' muh home...like this." She stood and shook her head.
"But every time I changed back I thought..." She paused. Turning her head back to him, she spoke. "Will ye...remember me when ye change back? Some creatures like ye in th'movies dinnae remember..."

This girl had some strong thoughts surrounding the concept of sinning. Darren could easily see that much. The wolf creature crinkled his muzzle a bit, trying to think of how to respond. By religious standards, even as a man he was a sinner. Partying, drinking, finding an attractive woman to flirt with. If she liked being an animal, Darren had no problems with it. "If you like being a beast, then be a beast. You're not living life to the fullest if you don't take a few risks," the werewolf said, getting himself comfortable as he began to lie down in the cool ground.
"Wish I ran through the forests back home like this. Sure, it's pretty empty over there, but it would have been so... Exhilarating. The smells, the sounds." The beast had a sense of longing. His primitive side wanted to run around the Alaskan tundra, hunt, and become a perfect predator. His human side just wanted to be accepted among the people. A conflict he had constantly gone through. He envied the femme, for she had gotten the opportunity to run around in the forests of her homeland. Darren had not gotten much of an opportunity to do that.
She spoke, but she paused. Darren wasn't sure why, but he didn't question it. He heard a question. The large canine had to stifle a laugh when she mentioned movies. "This isn't Hollywood, lassie. I remember everything, even when I'm just a man. I'd assume the same goes for you?"

"Muh powers are nae o' the-" She stopped herself before spouting anymore religious sermons on the clear non-believer. It wasn't something that bothered Rahne. But he was for sure of the devil himself. At least that's what she assumed. She shifted her paws and cleared her throat. "I mean, I c'n change back whene'er I want. I dinnae need th' moon tae change." Her ears pinned back sheepishly.
"I would show you but it'd be indecent," she said, scratching her nose with a paw, "Y'know, th'whole clothes thing."

Darren knew what she was about to say before she stopped herself. Devil. He was a creature of the devil. Maybe it was true, but Darren constantly tried to convince himself otherwise. He wasn't some demonic beast in his eyes, just a misunderstood creature. He did his best to refrain from killing anybody, anyway. Unless you counted the small animals scurrying about as people. He didn't refrain from those as much. He rested his head on his hand-paws, hazel eyes slightly narrowed. He hated being reminded that he was a demonic beast in many cultures. Sure, there was modern media portraying werewolves in a favorable and sometimes really attractive light, but the women who liked werewolves would have a meltdown if they witnessed a real one standing out their door. Darren was sure of it. When Rahne had mentioned changing, the look in his eyes softened.
"I only need the moon to change once a month. Other nights, I'm in far more control of changing. I've been training myself to control my... Beastly side. I'm a pretty attractive guy when you see me in the daytime, so I don't feel very compelled to be an animal some nights, despite it being pretty nice. Scares the ladies away," the werewolf said, lifting his head from its resting place. She mentioned that she'd be indecent if she changed, mentioning clothing. She seemed rather young from what Darren could tell. He didn't want to make her feel that uncomfortable.
"Right. Clothing. If you could find a, let's say a lost picnic blanket 'round here, you'd probably be just fine when you decide to change back, lassie." Darren had a habit of using nicknames. Despite knowing her real name, he felt compelled to use the name lassie, thanks to her accent. "I've been through many embarrassing changes. At least seven. I've gotten used to it by now."

"Tha's good then," Rahne said, "I could change back any time I wanted, as I'm a mutant an' no'...eh...ye know what I mean." She scratched behind her ear before freezing. "Ach..." She HAD to stop acting like a canine, she just HAD to! She pushed her body to the ground, laying there comfortably. She would have blushed if her fur'd allowed it. Attractive.
"I'd nae know aboot such things," she mumbled, "I...was nae allowed tae think aboot it." Her ears pinned back as she rose. "I dinnae have such a happy upbringin' away from...ach look at me. Ramblin' about. I'm so sorry."
She popped her head up. "Ye should come tae Xavier's! P'raps professor can help ye! I know yuir no' a mutant but...ye know he could help ye with the changes. They're no' painful are they?"
